BIOCUF

Biomimetic CO2 Fixation and Utilization for Formate Production

BIOCUF aims to demonstrate an advanced CO2 capture and utilization process that is based on enzymatic fixation.

The Future of Carbon Capture is Biological

BIOCUF (Biomimetic CO2 Fixation and Utilization for Formate Production) is a pioneering project dedicated to developing and demonstrating an advanced, cost-effective, and highly efficient Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) process. We are transforming the challenge of CO2 emissions into an opportunity for sustainable product creation.

Our innovative solution integrates biological components (enzymes) with a high-performance chemical process to simultaneously capture carbon dioxide and convert it into formate, a valuable chemical for energy storage and industrial raw materials

Key Innovations

Enzymatic Efficiency: We use a novel combination of Carbonic Anhydrase (CA) and Formate Dehydrogenase (FDH) enzymes, with the former increasing the absorption rate when combined with solvents.

Low-Energy Regeneration: By utilizing a phase-change solvent, we expect to significantly reduce the energy consumption for solvent regeneration compared to conventional systems. This allows desorption at low temperatures (e.g., 60 oC), utilizing readily available industrial waste heat or renewable energy.

Compact Design: The high kinetics of our enzymatic system are projected to enable significant reduction in the size of the absorption equipment compared to conventional systems, significantly lowering capital costs.
